Si-540 Silicon Diode

Supplier :

Wide 1.4 K – 500 K range with strong sensitivity in the critical cryogenic band.
Get premium-grade performance at an economical price

The Scientific Instruments Model Si-540 Silicon Diode Temperature Sensors operate over a wide temperature range (1.4K to 450K) and are miniature in size. They are linear over a wide temperature range interval, have high sensitivity in their lower range, and are interchangeable to a standard V/T curve

ABOUT

SYSTEM FEATURES

High Sensitivity at Low Temperatures

Si-540 sensors offer excellent sensitivity in the cryogenic range, especially below 30 K.
1.4 K to 100 K is the « sweet spot » for Si-540.

Interchangeability

Si-540 diodes are interchangeable to a standard calibration curve, meaning you don’t always need individual calibration.
This simplifies integration in multi-sensor systems.

Cost-Effective

Relative to other cryogenic sensors like germanium resistors, Si-540 diodes are affordable and reliable.
SI-540 offer a good performance-to-cost ratio, especially when calibration is not essential

Radiation Hardness

Compared to other sensor types, silicon diodes have good radiation tolerance, making them suitable for space or nuclear environments.

Wide Temperature Range

Typical operating range: ~1.4 K to 500 K.
This makes them versatile for applications from deep cryogenic environments up to room temperature and beyond.

Low Power Dissipation

Operate with very low excitation current (typically 10 µA), minimizing self-heating — a big deal in cryogenic environments where heat load must be kept minimal.

How and Why

Game Changer on these applications

1

Cryogenic Systems (1.4 K to 100 K)

This is the « sweet spot » for DT-670 sensors — high sensitivity, stable readings, and minimal calibration drift

2

 General Purpose Lab Cryogenics

Affordable, consistent from unit to unit, and doesn’t always need individual calibration

3

Space Instruments & Aerospace Cryo Systems

Rugged and radiation-tolerant to some extent (though not as much as Zirnox).

4

Backup or Redundant Sensors in High-End Systems

Their affordability and good interchangeability make them perfect for adding extra measurement points or backup monitoring.

5

Liquid hydrogen infrastructures

Wide Temperature Range covering all phases of liquid hydrogen (boiling point at 20.27 K).
High Sensitivity allowing precise control and monitoring of hydrogen storage and transfer systems.
Low Excitation Current reduces heat dissipation, preventing unwanted temperature variations in liquid hydrogen systems

Si540-Datasheet

Silicon diode – Response curve

For more than 55 years, Scientific Instruments (SI) has been the quiet force behind everything from the Apollo lunar landings to today’s quantum computers.

If your program needs radiation-hard, field-immune sensors, flight- or H2 immerged-certified probes, or one sensor that spans milli-kelvin to 450 K, Scientific Instruments is the sharper tool in the box.

By joining forces with this illustrious company, Qnity has sealed a high-impact partnership for research and several strategic European industries (fusion, accelerators, aerospace, quantum, hydrogen mobility…).

Scientific Instruments supplies cryogenic instrumentation specially adapted to this type of need, with the very high level of traceability required.
